Who: Those with an interest in surveys and metrics in higher education
The insight from student surveys, metrics and other research enables us to get closer to the student experience and understand their needs. Doing so provides a valuable opportunity to evaluate the student experience, our assumptions, and our provision, as well as helping to engage staff. However, the real value of surveys, metrics and research findings depend upon the extent to which they are used to shine a light on issues affecting the sector, inform decisions, and drive enhancement at the institutional and sector-wide levels.
Each Surveys conference showcases how surveys are making a difference, and facilitates the sharing of innovative practice between professionals across the sector, both in measuring but also addressing the key issues affecting the student experience.

Paul Feldman, Chief Executive, Jisc
Paul Feldman is the chief executive of Jisc, the UK higher, further education and skills sectors’ not-for-profit organisation for digital services and solutions. Paul was an executive partner at Gartner UK and has spent over 20 years in financial services as well as working in knowledge-based IT companies.
Christine Broughan and Graham Steventon, Coventry University
Christine Broughan is Professor of Higher Education at the Global Learning: Education and Attainment Research Centre at Coventry University. She has a key role in equity and social inclusion research in the fields of education, ethnicity, gender, ageing, mental health and wellbeing. Christine has a proven track record in education leadership, teaching and research.
Graham Steventon qualified as an architect and gained a PhD in Sociology at Warwick University before becoming a senior lecturer in Criminology at Coventry University in 2002. He uses creative approaches to teaching and assessment (role play; immersive virtual contexts; podcasting; concept mapping) and has researched and presented internationally on pedagogy. He co-edited two previously published books (2012 and 2016, Routledge) on higher education.
The Surveys Conference provides an opportunity to discuss and debate the potential of insight from surveys, metrics, qualitative research and wider methods of capturing the voice of the sector for driving excellence and enhancement within higher education.
This year we welcomed papers from individuals with an interest in surveys, metrics and insight in higher education. Under the main theme for 2018, proposals for the conference were invited in each of the following four strands:
- Developing holistic views of the staff/student experience
- Insight within a global environment
- Teaching excellence
- Learning analytics and big data
HEA Surveys Conference 2017
2017’s HEA Surveys Conference included 18 presentations, 4 workshops and a dedicated poster session. We were also delighted to welcome two keynotes on the day, Mantz Yorke and Nick Hillman. 130 delegates attended from both the UK and internationally.
